CANCON 2015 PURCHASES

I picked up a couple of things while I was at Cancon, not much of a haul, but like I said the inspiration just wasn't there, anyway, as you can see I picked up the rule set Lion Rampant, have only heard good things thus far, so I look forward to trying this rule set out in the future, also picked up a few paint pots from Vallejo for an upcoming project, there is also a 15mm Ogre for my D&D project, which will feature in the next few posts, my D&D project that is, and finally also did a bit of an impulse buy, a 15mm mythological Hydra which marks the start of a new project based in Greek mythology, I am particularly excited about that project because I am of Greek descent, and have grown up reading the myths, I have already ordered some Greek hoplites from Xyston Miniatures who are the bees knees for all things ancient in 15mm, will post more on these items as I complete them.

CANCON 2015

So Cancon came around again this year (what a great way to start the year), it always occurs on the Australia Day Weekend 24-26th, my brother and I made the trip from Melbourne to Canberra via hire car and stayed at a local hotel, the weather was awesome 30 degree days for all the days we were there, cant really ask for more than that, of course I took some pics so that you all could experience it as well, enjoy.

Area for painting

Not Sure who this dude is??

There was lots of Bloodbowl action

Drop Zone Commander resin terrain

More Flames of War Terrain

Infinity

I have got to say I was a little disapointed this time around the show felt very unorganized, with a lot of areas merged with little to no signage, to tell the different areas apart, they had a tornaments area with some participation games tagged onto the end and they had more participation games blotched through out adjoined to some of the sellers area, there also didn't seem like there were much in the way of participation games, with a lot of the big titles missing.... no Saga (Cross and Cres), no Skirmish Sangin etc... There was only one canteen in operation which meant that it took 10mins at least to get anything to eat or drink, Overall it seems to me that the crowds grew but the show didn't, I sure hope there are improvements made, I did still enjoy it, but changes are needed.

LITTLE WARS 2012

Battle of Rork's Drift - 28mm

Little Wars Melb 2012 ran for only one day (Sunday) this is probably Melbournes largest Game convention, which isn't very big by international standards, but is still a good enough game convention to go too, and is the only game convention in my area (beggers cant be chooses), it was held in a German club, club Tivoli, a nice place with a full eating facility and bar, but unfortunately the big hall they had the convention in was dark and dingy, no climate control, so hot and stuffy and too top it off it had shitful lighting, ah well what can you do....
I adjusted my camera settings and started to snap away  (apologies about the photos)

Sword Beach, D-Day - 15mm FOW WWII

Command & Colors Board game conversion
Romans vs Gauls - 28mm

Warning:
Many Teddy bears were hurt in the making of this terrain.

Battle of Waterloo - 15mm FOG Napoleonics
Charge of the Ice brigade - 28mm Wings of War rules

Cast of Thousands - 28mm Pulp gaming

Home Brew rules (no one dies ! WTF ?!)

Force on Force Afghanistan - 28mm

I took the time to participate in a Force on Force game, and really enjoyed it, but found that the realism factor was lacking big time, while I was there the US troops radio failed to work like 4-5 times, we (Afghanies) shot 5 US troopers only to have them revived by one of their team mates, and I couldn't help but feel that the game favoured the US heavily, even though in this game the Afghanies put the smack down on the US.

I even managed to score an invite with this local gaming group, well see how that goes.

LITTLE WARS MELB 2012

Just a quick post to let you know, Ancient Warriors (me) will be going to Little Wars Melbourne 2012, so you can expect pics and a quick rundown of events, this is only a smallish convention / show but there should be sum good stuff available, I'm hoping to take part in a Saga demo game if time permits, again you can expect a post some time next week.
Cheers for now.

CANCON GOODIES

Hi all, took a bit of a break from it all, between the hot weather and my laziness not a lot could get done, so I'm just going to show off some of my Cancon Goodies that I picked up while I was up in Canberra, you would have read that my Brother and I got involved in some demo games while we were at the convention and as a direct result ended up purchasing two versions of Wings of War, which is an air combat game using miniature planes, I purchased the WW2 version and my brother picked up the WW1 version of the game.

Once we got back to Melbourne, I joined an online forum which is specifically to do with the Wings of War game, I quickly realised that the WW1 version of the game was quite popular and that most of the planes were hard to get, coupled with the fact that the license rights were sold to another company and the WW1 planes were not being made anymore, so I decided to put the WW2 version of the game to the side, and help my brother purchase as many WW1 planes as possible, the race was on !! buy them as cheap as possible and as quickly as possible.

CANCON 2012

As previously posted I planned a trip to Cancon 2012 it is located in the suburb of Mitchell in Canberra, Australia, this was my first visit to a major convention here in Oz, must say I was excited.

I made the long drive up with my bro John (pictured above), we basically hired a vehicle and did the whole road trip thing, the trip itself wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, still plenty tiring though.

Demo Games

As far as free Demo games go, there wasn't enough, but there were some outstanding ones like this Alamo game, great scenery, plenty of miniatures and the guys were friendly to boot ! so much eye candy to be had here.

Another awesome demo game, Wings of War a WW1 air combat game, a great terrain mat, excellent miniatures and what seemed like a great set of rules, there were plenty of mid air collisions, machine gun jams, and close calls.

Tournament games
There was a lot of tournaments happening while we were there, I took pics of a few that I noticed as I passed them going to other games, Blood bowl, Stalingrad, DBA, Infinity.

They even dedicated a whole section to Magic the Gathering...... waste of space ?? I guess a lot of people didn't think so !

Traders
Now this is another area that I thought was a little lacking, barely anyone selling terrain or terrain pieces, and those who were selling miniatures had them all in a box in which you had to rummage through to find what you wanted, could have been better organised me thinks, but there were some traders that had set themselves up properly, they seemed to be the busiest, coincidence ? think not, here are some of the better set ups.

Overall Cancon 2012 was quite fun with plenty to do if you were prepared to get involved The game that stole our imagination the most was the WW1 air combat game Wings of War ! we watched it being played, even that was fun to do, we also played a few demo games, in the end we succumbed and bought the game ourselves, easily the best demo game of Cancon 2012.

What a collection .... Wow.

My brother and I played in this game, I am the German plane in the middle that is about to get sandwiched by two British planes, in this series of games I got shot at, hitting my fuel tank and causing me to explode in mid air, I was also shot to pieces over a few goes, causing my plane to crash to the earth, in other incidents I had a few close call possible mid air collisions, cannot praise this game enough for the 'Fun Factor' it puts out.

Its the Red Baron ! where was he when I needed him ?!!?
